“House & Home” explores America’s built environment through seven history-filled galleries.
The National Building Museum unveiled its House & Home exhibition April 28, exploring different elements of iconic and classic American housing through mixed media projects.
National Building Museum curator Sarah Leavitt said the exhibition will run for at least five years, offering a closer look at the nation’s built environment and the legislative infrastructure that framed the way we live.

Earlier this month, 901 Restaurant & Bar was one of the first DC restaurants to welcome diners al fresco with its chic outdoor porch. The Penn Quarter spot boasts one of the largest outdoor seating patios in the area—800 square feet of space, or enough for 55 diners to nosh together during lunch hour. General Manager Kelvin Nwosu says the restaurant sped up construction of the new sidewalk dining area in order to savor the early gift of beautiful weather even sooner.

The American Heart Association brings its black-tie Heart Ball to the District to celebrate triumphs against heart disease. With a cocktail reception, a silent and live auction, dinner and dancing to Retrospect, honor this year’s three Heart Heroes: two members of the U.S. Air Force and a cardiac surgeon who founded the Living Heart Foundation. The latter, which debuted mobile cardiovascular screening, is fundamental in helping diagnose emergency workers at Ground Zero.

After an encounter at Walter Reed in 2008 with a struggling soldier named Luke Shirley, Luke’s Wings co-founders Sarah Wingfield and Fletcher Gill took off with an aim to bring families together to heal by covering the cost of domestic flights to military hospitals across the country. Two years later, Lindsay Kin, now executive director of business development at the charity, helped Gill file a grant from the state of Texas for the initiative, which they won in 2011, and she has been involved with the cause ever since.

An assistant professor of plastic surgery at Johns Hopkins University with his own private practice, Dr. Navin Singh of Washingtonian Plastic Surgery knows a lot about improving appearances. He also knows a lot about improving the lives of children in need. Singh, along with fellow Johns Hopkins plastic surgeon Sachin Shridharani, wrote a book called Special Smiles, whose proceeds benefit Operation Smile, a charity devoted to helping children with cleft lips and palates.
